Hagerstown Strikes Just the Right Mix of Historic & Hip for Senior Living
With roots dating all the way back to 1762, our native Hagerstown began as a hub for trade and transportation, so much so that multiple railroad lines ran through the heart of town, which soon garnered the nickname “Hub City.” Probably best known for being the site of the Battle of Antietam, one of the most pivotal of the entire Civil War, today’s Hagerstown is steeped in history and centuries-old traditions but also a robust arts and culture element that does much to strike the perfect mix of old and new.
The epicenter for life and culture in Hagerstown is unquestionably the Arts & Entertainment District. Situated near the city center, it’s home to the Maryland Theatre and Performing Arts Complex, offering year-round shows, concerts, and events. The Maryland Symphony Orchestra also creates its home at the theatre.
In addition, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts is situated in the lovely Hagerstown City Park and boasts an amazing collection that is permanent with a schedule that keeps you active like exhibitions, concerts, lectures, films, and special events for all ages. Hagerstown even has a Cultural Trail that connects the Arts District with City Park and the museums. Filled with public art experiences, unique gathering areas, and much more, the trail is a bona fide destination all its own.
For history buffs, an abundance of monuments, memorials, and Civil War battlefields including the Battle of South Mountain are can’t-miss destinations. There’s also the Jonathan Hager House Museum which carries on the legacy of our city’s founder and the City Park Train Hub and its crown jewel, Steam Engine 202, which carried passengers for around 40 years and is the only steam locomotive of its kind in existence.
Outdoor lovers will enjoy the area’s five national parks and eight state parks, which provide ample opportunities for fishing, picnics, canoeing, bird watching and so much more. And for those who enjoy wine, craft beer, and spirits, there are several stops along the Washington County Pour Tour right here in Hagerstown, including Antietam Brewery, Benny’s Pub, and Stone House Urban Winery, to name a few.
